student centered environment that is conducive to learning.
One of my personal goals as a librarian is to create a welcoming place that students, staff and parents want to come to, as opposed to the old fashion notion of mean librarians shushing everyone who makes a peep. This can be a difficult task in our library as it is a very small space that isn't sufficient for our needs.
That being said, we have tried to create a space that is conducive to learning by labeling the areas of the library with new signs, updating the picture book labels with fun labels and fostering an atmosphere where students are welcome to hang out, read, work together etc. Below are pictures of the library that demonstrate this.
We also created a set of library rules which we have posted around the library and shown below. This includes a chart for younger children to remind them how to speak quietly in the library. This is especially helpful for when there are older students trying to study in the library and the younger students are in the library looking for books or hanging out during recess.
